No, it didn’t. At least, it didn’t honestly…the prequels were created because George Lucas wanted to sell more toys to children. And the new films were created because, well, Disney; literally the only selling point of it in any of the commercials was “TAKE YOUR KIDS TO SEE IT!” You see, what people failed to account for in there was that the creators change over time, too, so that where once there was a starry-eyed young entertainer is now a bloated media mogul, or in the case of Star Trek and Roddenberry, a slightly addled old guy who no longer understood proper storytelling (he wanted to abolish interpersonal conflict by TNG). The original vision stays the same, and it really doesn’t have to be a complete remake, either–you can take the same premise for something and go a thousand different ways for it. Heck, you might even base it on an original idea that was rejected! I’d love to watch a Zootopia that was based on the noir dystopia it was originally supposed to be, for a recent example.
This. I mean it’s why a lot of people are at best lukewarm to the new Ghostbusters: A serial-numbers-filed-off style reboot. It’s also the reason I myself am only lukewarm towards the ST reboot films, as it feels like they’ve only made the body of a Star Trek film, not the soul too.

You do realise that that attitude led to the Star Wars Prequels (and depending on who you ask, the recent Star Wars film too), right? What something was “supposed to be” is a theoretical good product, not an actual good product. Using Star Trek as an example, if you were a ST fan in the nineties, then you feel into two camps: the fans who thought that TNG was what ST was always “supposed to be,” and the fans who thought that DS9 is what ST “could be if you allowed it to stretch its wings.” Neither side is/was wrong, it’s that what something is “supposed to be” is not indicative of intrinsic quality, nor is “taking something in a new direction” is indicative of intrinsic failure, either in terms of relation to the source material, or what something is about.
I actually think the best reboots are the ones that take franchises that were good but could have been better and aim to get them closer to what they were supposed to be originally. Like the upcoming SWAT Kats reboot/sequel series, minus the executive meddling.
You know what? I kinda like them going this route with it. Its such a massive, ridiculous departure from the source material that I honestly gotta admire the sheer balls involved, but then I’ve always felt that the best sort of reboots are the ones that take the characters and premise and then run with them in a new direction instead of trying to stick too hard to what the source was like.
That’s the comic book, but aren’t they also doing a separate animated series, too?

Trixie is too competent as well. Dastardly was an idiot but it’s canon that Trixie is a genius. Word of god says she attended Celestia’s school for gifted youngsters.
