Maybe they CAN fly - they’re winged, after all - but it’s ridiculously more fatiguing for their teensy weensy little bodies, so they use natural - or pegasus-made - air currents, because, were they to fly or walk, it would take an awful lot of time.  
Also, maybe where there aren’t pegasi, other kind races help out by giving them a ride (mules, for example - they ARE overly polite - or the nature-loving zebras)

Considering they hide in an (apparently) completely sealed off cave (probably for long periods of time), it’s possible they just send a lot out and how as many come back as possible.
 
The pegasi just felt like helping them after a while.

It’s not just that. What gets me is they need the pegasi to make the wind for them.
 
The pegasi ponies weren’t always so nice. They were warriors and kept to themselves.
 
What gets me is how they were able to do this before ponies.

I miss the show so much
Why the hell do creatures like breezies NEED to make any trips to get pollen (or whatever it was) in the first place? Evolution would weed out that immediately.
