The original script was apparently incredibly mean-spirited. Like, instead of AJ’s folsky awkwardness and attempts at ignoring him, Rarity got openly annoyed apparently.
 
To be fair, SaYS really is an oddball. Like I said, I don’t think Williams is really even in the writing pool anymore. They seem to have replaced her with Powell, Valentine, Haber, and Levinger. Plus consider that Amy Keating Rogers came back for S4 and Larson is probably coming back for S5.
 
You can’t deny that Polsky has gotten better at writing for the show the more he has done it, something you can’t say for Williams.
 
They could afford to let her have “Bats!” and then leave, I guess.

Mean to Spike eh? Granted I didn’t like OWTEW, but they gave it to the writer who doesn’t mind:
 
1.Derailing Spike to an incompetent klutz, who’s family makes him a credit to his race not worthy of a bloody group photo.  
2. Have Dashie’s friends screw around with her for the sake of proving a point in the most hypocritical way.  
3. Have Fluttershy cut her friends to the point of telling them they’re destiny’s are pointless.
 
For the sake of curiosity, I would love to see the original script.

My ideal sacenario for a Spike redemption episode, would be Spike somehow gaining the ability to grow a little (maybe teenage size) by different emotion other than greed, in order to save the day and his friends for real at least once. Of course, they should make it so it happens without him realizing exactly HOW he did it (or just make it so he doesn’t remember what happened), and leave the precise workings a mystery for later seasons.

Be thankful McCarthy caught it, I guess. It just had the unfortunate coincidence of being passed to Williams. If it were an S4 episode, it probably would have been passed to Haber or Valentine instead…

Polsky wrote the original version of Spike At Your Service.  
McCarthy turned it down because it involved Rarity being mean to Spike, something she didn’t want to happen in the context of the show because it was that bad.  
She gave it to Merriwether Williams to re-write it with Applejack instead.
 
Polsky is writing a Spike episode this season, so I was saying that he’s hopefully learned from his lesson.

He is indeed getting another episode. By someone who I will give the benefit of the doubt because he admitted he didn’t write SaYS well enough to the point where his script was thrown out.
 
And there was an episode written by Polsky that Tabitha St. Germain said was amazing, either it was RtM or this episode.
