Given that Rarity was able to get a makeover that apparently made her into one, the “Crystal” Pony thing seems to be more cultural than anything else.
 
Genetically, they appear to be the same mustangs, pegasi, and unicorns as their southern neighbors.

I figured since Crytsal Ponies probably have different cell biology, typical pony diseases can’t affect them at all. Of course, Cady isn’t one, so she’s gonna be sneezing all night long.
