Well that and I’ve never seen a fucking purple horse. Nor the many insane number of bright colors or horses with wings, horns, and occasionally both. Horses that have actively used magic, can fly, are sapient and are capable of almost anything a human cab do.
 
I think it’s safe to say these ponies are different enough from real ponies to eat chocolate.

I think I can sum it up by saying that ponies in Equestria have an extremely different biology than real life horses.

I’ve been around since S1. I thought the scene was hilarious! I’m pretty sure the scene was received rather well. I think most of the discussion around that episode came from Celestia’s “Gotcha” moment. I do recall there were a lot of jokes about Pinkie Pie being banished to the moon for eating Celestia’s food, too.
 
In this case, I think it’s mostly mocking the some Tumblr drama about a CGI bird in a chocolate fountain.

Question for those who’ve been in the fandom since the s1 days: Was there a spate of comments chiding Pinkie Pie for her unsanitary eating habits after “A Bird in the Hoof”?

As others have stated, chocolate is toxic to humans to. It’s just a question of quantity. Lethal dose of a toxin (or anything, as almost anything can be toxic if you have enough) is measured in <amount, like grams or milligrams> per kilogram. For example, the LD50 (dose to have a 50% chance of death) of theobromine for humans is approximately 1000 mg per kg. Dogs are approximately 500 mg per kg. Dark chocolate has over 400 mg per oz. Milk chocolate has less. So for every kilogram a human has, he/she would have to consume about 2.5 oz of dark chocolate to have a 50% chance of death.
 
Interestingly, Humans don’t have the highest reported tolerance to Theobromine. Rats do. Their LD50 is at 1265 mg per kg

Like this is the first time ponies have eaten chocolate in the show, lol. If it was poisonous to ponies, then discord’s chocolate milk rain would suddenly be a whole lot more sinister…and pinkie would be dead o.O
