The joys of consistent handles. :) I’m starting to notice that I repeatedly meet the same people here on Derpibooru – and apparently elsewhere, too. (And if you were among my upvoters, thanks! I’m looking forward to seeing Sunset Shimmer in one of her quieter moments.)

I should consolidate my thoughts on Flash – and Sunset, too – and find somewhere permanent-ish to put them. Comments are ephemeral, and not easy to look up or wander through; I think some of this would be worth putting somewhere where it could be seen.

It’s always nice to talk with another Flash fan. Maybe we’ll see the adult male part of the fandom in general come around on him, one day. (Pegasisters seem to mind him a lot less than bronies do; and as for the actual target audience of this mixed-up show, well, who knows?)

Oh, hey, I just realized I saw you around in the /r/Sunsetshimmer sketch thread. Nice.

Yeah, I agree with you about Flash. He and Twilight complement one another rather well I think. She with her tense neuroticism, and him with his laid back demeanor (when he’s not under some magical personality-altering spell, anyway).

Apparently, yes. :)

Waifu Thief can take it, though. And while he’s at it, he’ll steal your waifu. He’ll steal all your waifus. Of course, he might get in a little over his head…

More seriously, I think that Flash Sentry has a fair bit of depth, but you have to be watching critically to catch it. (Sunset Shimmer is the same.) His interactions with Twilight were brief, forced, and a little annoying, but I think they’re a very good match for all that.

By my reading, Flash likes excitement, but he’s not very imaginative or unconventional (he plays a guitar, even); so he seeks to make his life more interesting by dating girls who can only be called a little crazy. As I never tire of saying, because it’s so funny to write, if a girl would never pull a switchblade because her pizza was late, and would never tearily confess in his arms that they could never be together because she was secretly a rainbow unicorn princess from the magical land of ponies, Flash would just not be interested. Too predictable. Too boring. Too white-bread.

But he’d always be there for Twilight, always eager to look after her, always willing to goof up and give her a little laugh. He’d stick up for her in times of trouble, and help shore up her fragile self-confidence. He wouldn’t lose his patience with her when she worried herself into a stable time loop, or unleashed forbidden magics and nearly destroyed her village to keep from being tardy on a routine assignment. Unconditional love and support is something Twilight hasn’t had much of in her life (Princess Celestia gives it to her, but I don’t think Twilight believes that), and it’s certainly something she needs.

Consider for a second that Twilight Sparkle doesn’t entirely exist, but you, the reader, do exist. If you love her, you should want the best for her – and that means seeing her happily settled down with someone neither more nor less existing than she is. Twilight has enough power and status of her own, without marrying into them; what she needs is support and reassurance, and Waifu Thief can give her that.

It IS pretty awful.

Nothing wrong with Twilight dating (well, id be more comfortable keeping romance away from MLP - but broadly theres nothing actually wrong with it). But inventing the blandest bland character ever to just give to her is an insult to her intelligence.

Its kinda like romances in videogames, where half the time you are just handed the only woman in the plot and told ‘this is your girl - you love her because we say you do and shes the only thing in this game with tits’.

Thats what Flash Sentry is. Hes the creators going “This character has a penis! Go get ’im girl!”

True, its not like this series has a lot of male characters to begin with. but that just shows how pulled out of their asses it was to begin with. They made a movie, realised they HAD to have a romantic subplot (because being alone is for losers) and just invented generic captain of the football team-type to throw at Twilight.

I mean, doesnt that make you feel insulted for Twilight? “Hey Twi, you might be a horse from another dimension, extremely intellectual and previously uninterested in dating anyway, but im here to show you ever problem you have can be solved by my having a penis.”

Wow, so many downvotes, and for a drawing that looks absolutely lovely. For shame.

Because of the extreme hate, I couldn’t not upvote & favourite it. Problem? Sue me.

Seriously, is this pairing really worth getting so mad over?

22 people voted down this beautiful piece of art because of Flash Sentry. If it was any other character, even Shining Armor, it’d probably get less downvotes.

Downvotes or not, and despite how Flash Sentry was quite a flat meaningless character, this is a sweet picture.

I can see them living happily ever after.
