Well, I assumed that to start with.
…which is why I never said anything until now…
@archestereo
Or it could just be a standard animation convention that just about every cartoon uses.
…if that’s really true, doesn’t that actually undermine that thing about breaking preconceptions that earned such a following to begin with? I mean, seriously, they’re gonna hafta learn sooner or later; so why WOULDN’T you want to encourage them to learn SOONER? For goodness sake, they devoted an ENTIRE EPISODE to celebrating literacy, and now bronies let out a squee every time they see Dashie reading or so much as a cameo of Daring Do! This would mean all of that was a COMPLETE HYPOCRISY, and the worst part is that WE’RE ACTUALLY ENCOURAGING IT! If that UTTER BULLCRAP is actually true, then I can’t with good conscience continue to follow this franchise, or for that matter ANY of Hasbro’s properties, in any capacity (and quite frankly, it’s not like I didn’t have reasons to stop before).
Do you think a rebus puzzle schema would be workable?
Unfortunately, that wouldn’t work. You’ve seen how Equestrian “writing” looks like jibberish? It’s because the show deliberately avoids showing actual written text so as not to confuse the younger, pre-literate audience.
When Genma is in panda form he can’t speak, so the subtitle is just a translation of the text on the sign (in every format except the original).
…Did those signs ever get edited with English text when Ranma was dubbed?
I’ve always wanted Derpy to sound like Goofy, except with a feminine touch. /)
Alternatively, if Hasbro can’t or won’t give Derpy a voice, then they ought to go the Genma Saotome route and have her communicate via signs.
Though maybe that’s only because the voice the did give her was jarringly awful.
Yeah! I recall Lauren Faust saying that’s how she saw Derpy! I rather like that idea, like how Derpy appeared in Nightmare Nights. :D
It was purely DHX’s decision to acknowledge the fanbase. They didn’t have to keep derping her eyes or include her at all. I am grateful and humbled that they did. That’s why I love the DHX crew so much. (I was honestly surprised back in S1 when Lauren and crew would freely talk about the show with the fledgling fandom.)
Acting like we’re entitled to Derpy is an asshole move. DHX did this for fans because we’ve been awesome to them. Entitlement is not an awesome fan trait.
That is all.
Also, I’m casting my vote for Grey DeLisle as the official voice. It’ll never happen but a man can dream.
She never needed to have a voice in the first place.
They were INCREDIBLY FUCKING GENEROUS to ever even give her a voice in the first place.
Before that, everyone was quite happy with her being just a “Where’s Waldo” of the pony world.
Stop acting like we’re entitled to her having a voice, because we’re not.
Short term memory issues?
On another note: Twilight, didn’t you decide not to give the spare Gala ticket to anyone? How are you in a position to criticize Rainbow?
I have to agree with this. I always pictured Derpy as a kind of Harpo Marx type character, one who would wander into a scene and do odd, inexplicable things that gave you a chuckle. She doesn’t need a voice for that.
But, I guess I can accept her returning to silence, as long as we continue to see her. Although, if they choose to continue the silent route, I kinda hope they don’t keep putting her in situations where she could talk, but doesn’t.
