Representations of griffons have been found dating as far back as 3,300 BC in ancient Persian and Egyptian art, and were seen in parts of Ancient Greece in 1,500 BC. (Although one hypothesis suggests that the griffon originated in Mongolia because of naturally exposed protoceratops fossils.) By the middle ages, the griffon was a widely used symbol in countries exposed to christianity.
