Thats a nice theory
Some Japanese artists have linked to 4chan and even derpibooru. They like Raricow just as much as we do, although they call her Moo Moo Rarity or Cowrity.
My understanding is this edit is what inspired the Pixiv artist, then it took off in his circle of friends, and then it came back to English speakers.
The first several raricow pics came from pixiv.
