Remembering’s dangerous. I find the past such a worrying, anxious place. “The Past Tense,” I suppose you’d call it. Memory’s so treacherous. One moment you’re lost in a carnival of delights, with poignant foalhood aromas, the flashing neon of getting your cutie mark, all that sentimental candy-floss… the next, it leads you somewhere you don’t want to go. Somewhere dark and cold, filled with the damp ambiguous shapes of things you’d hoped were forgotten. Memories can be vile, repulsive little brutes. Like foals I suppose. But can we live without them? Memories are what our reason is based upon. If we can’t face them, we deny reason itself! Although, why not? We aren’t contractually tied down to rationality! There is no sanity clause! So when you find yourself locked onto an unpleasant train of thought, heading for the places in your past where the screaming is unbearable, remember there’s always madness. Madness is the emergency exit… you can just step outside, and close the door on all those dreadful things that happened. You can lock them away… forever.

You want to know why my eyes are red and green? My father. He worked at Cloudsdale’s Rainbow Factory. And he was a gambler. Night after night he would blow his entire paycheck at the poker table, and all he could bring home to feed me and mom were liquid rainbows. One night, my mom is a little more hungry than usual. One night she loses her temper and hits my father. So he looks at her. Laughing as he does it. “You should be damned happy to have rainbows to eat” he says. “You should be thankful that we have rainbows to eat!!!” So he starts pouring the rainbows down her throat, choking her as he does it. Then he turns to me. “Where’s that twinkle in your eye, little filly?” So he comes at me, with the bowl of rainbows. “Where’s that little twinkle?” And he prys my eyelids open. “Little fillies eyes are supposed to twinkle.” Aaaaaand… Where’s that twinkle in your eye?

Oh god yes, I’ve been waiting for something like this.

You look nervous. Is it the red and green eyes? Would you like to know how I got them? My coltfriend; He absolutely loved Hearth’s Warming Eve. Just loved it. But you see, he had depression. Real bad. The only time he was ever truly happy, was when there were all the red and green lights around. It was the only time he ever smiled; I just wanted him to smile! I just wanted him to be happy. So one day, he’s even more depressed than usual. He’s talking about suicide. So this day I take some food coloring and a syringe. All I wanted was for him to smile when he looked into my eyes. I thought he’d smile, because he’d see Hearths Warming Eve. And you know what? He couldn’t stand to look at me!!! So he left. Now I think I know how he feels. Every time I look in the mirror I see Hearths Warming Eve; Every time I look in the mirror, I’M HAPPY!!!
