Aaaaaand this tread just got depressing. Time to bail.
In the intervening week, he has learned to embrace his uselessness. Like a baby rolling around smiling in its feces packed diaper, Spike is now proud to be dead weight.
I think he’s trying to convince himself that he did something useful.
Somehow, I can’t help but think of this scene as indicating they had something planned for Spike but cut, but kept this scene in as a joke… Considering how at times Spike IS the comic relief on par with maybe the Greek Chorus.
Well, he did end up accidentally trashing a few rooms (there was a humorous bit where he broke off a piece of a water pipe, and Rarity was nudging it in the background with a look of horror on her face), but I think a lot of it can be chalked up to his youthful enthusiasm causing him to make more mistakes than usual.
Although you bringing up the rock tower and the blades of grass reminds me of a discussion I had with the user nh_Snork over at EQD. I brought up the fact that, while Spike did seem a little upset when Twilight casually dismissed him the way she did (of course, she was super absorbed in her studies, but still), he seemed to be rather okay with it afterwards. nh_Snork pointed out that, after Twilight dismissed him, he ended up trashing a few rooms, built a giant rock tower, and counted a few million blades of grass, and that maybe his behavior in the episode was because he really was kind of hurting inside from Twilight “dismissing” him like that.
I know, but they kinda sunk all the goodwill built up for him in that episode
@RIG
She didn’t thank him for anything, she was thanking someone else and Spike jumped in, thinking it was about him.
Yeah, this. Been a long time since I watched that episode, but wasn’t the only thing he really messed up that cake? He made those huge towers and counted blades of grass.
Also, remember how he’s just a kid and is sometimes a little overenthusiastic about things (I’m applying this style of “debate” to the common criticisms of Spike at Your Service).
Remember how the episode said that just because they may not always need him doesn’t mean he’s useless? Remember how he’s supposed to be a cocky little thing?
Remember how he wasn’t useful at all this episode and still took credit for things?
I’m sure there was a point I was meant to make….
