You are talking about a world where the ponies DO everything from controling the weather to feeding animals, to bring birds back when winter is gone, heck, they even WRAP UP winter! Besides Twi read that spell in a book which means it was created by other unicorn mages and probably put to uses alot like in cases of pony eating bears for example.

At lest with the bats it didn’t make them eat other things, it’s likely they still eat fruit but are just not touching apples.
