Yes, they’re all ponies, but they’re also Pegasi, Unicorns, and Earth Ponies. the same way that humans, dogs, and duck-billed platypi are mammals. Just because you are part of a higher order, doesn’t mean you can’t be divided by your suborders.

Since Equestria is basically fantasy Europe mixed with Greek mythology, it would be strange if cows, donkeys or sheep were recent arrivals from some foreign country. Where would they have come from?

From S01E01:
>the two sisters maintained balance for their kingdom and their subjects: all the different types of ponies.

@DanielTepesKraus - saying that Greek is a derivative of Latin is like saying that wolves had been bred from dogs. It’s the Latin that was, not derived from, but strongly influenced, by Greek language.

And regarding the mules, author might want to read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mule#Fertility
There must be quite a lot of interspecies going on in Equestria to keep the numbers…

To be fair, most of the show has been set in Ponyville, which has been described as “founded by Earth ponies”. That suggests that Earth ponies are the majority in the show setting. If we had more episodes set in Canterlot or Cloudsdale, the number of Unicorns and Pegasi would probably even up with the Earth ponies.

Both spellings are kind of correct. I prefer “Gryphon”, though.

And actually, “Pegasi” is not a proper plural for “Pegasus”, despite the show’s constant use of it. As a Greek name, Pegasós, its plural - such that one can exist - should be “Pegases”. Adding an “i” is a Latin-ism, and thus incorrect.

Also, I reject this piechart as pure headcanon. My headcanon (which is totally moar valid you guyz) says Earthponies are an outright majority, and non-ponies aren’t citizens and thus don’t count on these charts.

This is actually pretty legit, knowing that Earth ponies take care of the crops well, there has to be alot of them right?
