I’m perfectly aware why; I just find it a wonky handwave for a stale-as-hell dysfunctional-dad trope. ‘Sides, it’s not like the SoME incident was all at once-took a little while for Spike to fully hulk out then. Here the RAEG seems to flick on with near-nil warning (or physical change), or he would’ve been restrained much earlier.

Why do you think he was locked out of the maternity for the remainder of her labor?

Still not sure his ‘nature’ needed to exacerbate this in the first place for cheap birth-drama lulz. Could’ve just as easily had him trying to keep a supportive face or staring in horror at the ‘business end’ whilst Rares TK-crushes his tail or something. Having him go full-hosebeast and make her day that much rougher (not to mention get barred next time) just rubs me the wrong way.
 
I guess this is just one of those older-than-dirt tropes that grates on me since plenty of males can & do lend moral/practical support for their partners. Pop culture just rolls with Panicky Dadz(C) as a given ’cause manic friction sells.

Why? It isn’t like incidents of HUMAN father’s having ‘issues’ with deliveries is all that uncommon. Spike’s issue just happens to be compounded by his nature.

Mighty odd that dragons would key on equinoid scent-markers for such…or that females would even have much need of keyed-up male guardianship in the first place. I mean, sure nobody wants their clutch crunched, but given the size of Spike’s egg, you’d think the average adult dragoness would have minimal issues with laying. Certainly less of a production than squeezin’ out foals.
 
Then again, such a response could vary from subspecies to subspecies-plenty of modern-day reptiles produce live young (often in bulk), and adult size likely varies just as widely.
 
Necropost, I know, but this little scene and its sequel constitute the one Kilalaverse sticking point that just bugs me. After keeping The Beast(R) solidly under wraps for a decade-and-change (and with nary a hint of post-SoME relapse in-show), Spike’s Hardwired Instinct Derpout(TM) renders him a five-alarm liability here? Not cool.
