Probably the most detailed and realistic idea for Equestrian government that I have seen. Higher res at source.
Except for the lack of federalism and complete top-down rule? What do they teach in government class these days?!
I guess a better word is “somewhat.”
Cant be! Equestria seems to actually be a prosperous nation with little racial tensions or pollution and everyone seems to actually like the government.
Yeah that’s probably the best solution.
Hmmn. That would make sense.
As the military caste, maybe they were just more disciplined? It’s not really a question of wealth (unicorns definitely had more material wealth, but earth ponies were the main, if not only, producers)
The earth ponies, yes, but they’re the lowest ranking caste. The unicorns were all over the place, with some having ragged hoods and and some having crowns.
With the pegasus ponies, the best we saw were helmets and the occasional laurel.
Pretty sure the other two races were all in rags.
…Checking…
Actually, everyone in the peanut gallery had clothes on, of all three races. One of the unicorns even had a crown on.
I think that they just grabbed whatever costume scraps were left for that part.
In the crowds of onlookers during the summit, only the Pegasi were dressed.
All six of the Reps were dressed. Unlike the other two castes, the military needed their armor as part of their job, meaning that they were the only caste to have a reason to wear clothes beyond showing off.
And the military caste was the only one shown to have resorted to eating food substitutes, a level of desperation that the other two didn’t descend to. We really don’t have any reason to think that the pegasus ponies were doing better than the others.
You can make an argument about Clover’s hood, but whether that was the result of low resources or if she just didn’t care is unknown.
If only the pegasi were able to afford to wear actual clothes to an important event, then it can be assumed that they were more wealthy.
That would mean something if ponies wore clothes on a regular basis.
And yet, of the three races, only one of them was all clothed.
At what point did you get the impression that she was given them away for free? The farming caste was making crops for the other castes to pay the protection fees that they were charging.
Most likely, the only one that was made more competent was Chancellor Puddinghead. Who else but a complete loon would give away lifegiving crops for free?
I saw it as “historical” in the same sense as Shakespeare’s histories, especially “Richard III”.
Truth takes a back seat to the theme of “look how wonderful our current glorious monarch is compared to the old days of hunchbacked monsters and civil war”.
The citizens don’t seem to have any control, given that even their judges and juries are appointed by administrators taking “Royal Cabinet directions”.
If you want to live in a fucking statist nightmare, try this place.
Abject squalor? The three races were in the middle of an extended blizzard and famine, neither of which would be conducive to high standards of living. And if you’re going to take what we saw literally, the pegasus ponies were reduced to eating parts of their own uniforms. Not really better than wearing rough hoods.
All that we can really say was that the three castes hated each other and all of them wanted to split off to form their own country.
It’s a common theory that the play shown in the episode is simply a child-friendly abridging, with all the character exaggeration that such a thing would be subject to. It could be that Commander Hurricane was an at least competent leader, judging from the fact that the Pegasi seemed to be the only one of the three races not living in abject squalor, suggesting a decent economy with few issues, in comparison to the Earth Ponies who had to support two other races or die, and the Unicorns, of which it is shown that the princess of their lands was the only pony who actually had more than rags to wear.
Commander Hurricane was shown to be an aggressive warmonger that threw tantrums rather than negotiating. While that position probably isn’t elected and might not be hereditary, saying that Hurricane got the position, or retained it, from pure competence is unsupported.
And while it’s possible that the position of Commander was was earned, it’s also possible that it was actually hereditary, especially given the pseudo-classical time period. Even being an elected position is possible, just with the other high-ranking officers casting votes. A military is just as prone to politics and nepotism or cronyism as any other organization.
All we really know about the old military caste was that they were completely willing to conquer a new race of serfs.
@Mayojar77
I think that the dividing line is whether or not they’re a (My Little) pony. Aside from non-ponies having seemingly lower status, the pony races do have complimentary abilities that provide their prominence in Equestria.
Oddly, I think that a changeling would have a better chance at high office than a donkey or a buffalo or another mundane species. Even if they need to eat love, they still have powerful magic, and can emulate at least unicorn magic.
Even so, I highly doubt that foreign citizens would be allowed into any form of Equestrian government.
