@Senile Old Pony
I’ll give you my personal take on them, IE how I personally felt while playing them. Starting with 4:

Silent Hill 4: The Room
One of the weaker games in the entire series. Not a terrible game, but not really worth playing unless you’re a die-hard Silent Hill fan. It’s biggest flaw is that such a huge majority of the game is unfun to play. The Water Prison is worse than OOT’s Water Temple, and the entire second half of the game is a huge letdown: it’s an escort mission where you just revisit the same areas from the first half.

Silent Hill Origins:
Okay at best. It’s the only game in the series where you can switch between Fogworld and Otherworld, and it introduced the breakable weapon idea, two serious letdowns for me. It’s still worth playing for the story though, since it does add a lot to the backstories of the other games. If you’re in it for the story, play this game, if you’re just in it for the gameplay, quit lying because nobody’s into Silent Hill just for the the gameplay. In other words, it’s worth playing.

Silent Hill Homecoming:
Despite what a lot of people have to say, it’s my personal favorite Silent Hill game. It puts a lot of emphasis on combat since you play as a US soldier, so you can block and dodge and the like. It also has an insane twist that blows your mind clear out of the water (hint hint). It also, at least in my books, has the best musical track in the entire series.

Silent Hill Shattered Memories:
You’ll either hate it or love it. Personally I loved it. It’s a reimagining of the first game (You play as Harry looking for his daughter), and although it’s gameplay is a bit clunky I consider it one of the best. Especially the ending, which is a brilliant twist and (if you get the good ending) one of the most powerful and touching cinematics I’ve ever seen in a game.

Silent Hill Downpour:
Probably the worst one to date. It’s sort of like the bastard child of Origins and Homecoming after they had a few too many at the drunken barn dance; it kind of took the bad mechanics from both and filtered out the good ones. It brought back the breakable weapon mechanic (UGH), has about five parts in the game where you abruptly loose all your weapons, gear, and your entire stash of curative items, and to get the best ending you have to do a no kill run. I think you’re allowed to kill one or two enemies, but it basically means you spend the entire game just running from monsters like a little bitch (And yes I know you did that in Shattered Memories, but you couldn’t fight back in that game and it compensated with hiding spots, a means to trap your enemies, and no puzzles during the chase scenes). Also, there’s no UFO Ending, which was my personal favorite part of the entire series. That’d be like if Season 4 of MLP just had no Pinkie Pie for no valid reason at all. Unless you gotta play ’em all, avoid Downpour.

I know people are busy rage-fapping about some swede in the comments right now. But are the newer silent hills worth playing? I only played 1 and 2 when I was younger but I loved the whole “ambient horror” they had. The school in 2 being the best example. Oh and the whole clues to puzzles being wrapped up in a poem.

Does Silent Hill still have those? Or has it become one of those “mo gore = mo scary” games?

Maybe if he would shut up about “Stephano” and barrels, I swear he talks of them even when not around, then I wouldn’t mind.
But to me it’s “BARRELS BERRELS AAHHHHHHHHHHHH STEPHANO BERRELS AAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!” all the time.
