Important for you guys to remember:  
The Avatar State isn’t activated solely for a power boost. It’s activated ANY time the Avatar draws upon the collective powers OR memories/conciousness of the previous Avatars. Aang Demonstrated this when he had his chats on the Lion Turtle’s back. Or any time they enter the Spirit world.

I count this as the third type of avatar state in this show
 
  1. Elements of Harmony  
  2. Individual power burst (in my opinion most related to the actual avatar state)  
  3. Alicorn flashback potion drug thingy
     
    Personally I would love to see more of the second one
