It’s just a fandom, like any other.
If you feel the need for cynicism over what goes on in it, you’re taking it too seriously.
You know what I think would make a great Celestia episode? Someone discovering her dark secret of being absolutely lousy at certain kinds of magic that most ponies assume she excels in, particularly combative magic. If you think about it, she’s never once won a fight without the aid of Luna, her “niece” and Shining Armor, or the Elements of Harmony. Wouldn’t it be interesting to hear her say that the reason she looks for ponies with potential, such as Twilight, Sunset, and Cadence, is that she knows she just can’t handle Equestria’s enemies herself? I doubt it will ever happen, but it would be amusing.
Well, she’s had more character development than Sombra, though not much more. I’d dearly love an episode for her along the lines of Luna’s “Luna Eclipsed”, but I’m not holding my breath.
@MooseMcgillycuddy
@Tenafly Viper
Y’all raise good points, but I’d have an easier time believing the “silent majority” is truly a majority if it wasn’t so silent. And at this late date, I kinda doubt anything can counter the cynicism I feel towards the fandom.
@Tenafly Viper
… damn. You guys are right, come to think of it. 90% of her character in my mind is actually fanon stuffs. Officially, we barely know anything about her personal history.
What’s sad is that that’s a pretty valid statement. We really DON’T know anything about Celestia…
Still more character development than Princess Celestia
@Ebalosus
If only some good could come of that.
The majority doesn’t give a shit. Because at the end of the day, it was just more dumb internet drama.
People who have been on the internet long enough know this. There are very, very few times when fighting the drama works, especially when 4chan is involved. The best thing you can do is just ignore it and go on with your own life.
I dunno if the silent majority speaking up would have helped. It doesn’t matter to people what anyone in this fan base says anymore. Even if you’re being completely calm and reasonable, you get attacked, and lumped in with the extremists.
Considering the recent clean-up on this site concerning drama, I’d wager anything concrete about Yamino was probably wiped away from the tag.
I really wish more people in this fan base would think before they act. :(
Not the only kind of commentary, but the majority. And it was on Equestria Daily and Ponibooru, as well as several deviantArt journals addressing the controversy. If they were the minority, I wish the majority had been more vocal.
And I get that Yamino is a liar and a troll, yes. That doesn’t mean all the transphobic jokes directed at her were either justified or helpful, to say nothing of the threats.
(Personally, I’d love to see some evidence of her hiding comments from mentally challenged Derpy defenders; given what I’ve seen of her behavior, I believe she’d do that, but it’d be nice to point to something when someone defends her actions.)
Well, then you must have been in quite the shithole places if that’s the only kind of commentary you saw. Also, while people like that were not only acting in an unacceptable manner, they are in the extreme minority, and do not represent everyone who was against the changes.
Also, Yamino did quite a lot of things to bring hatred upon herself. She was far from innocent in all of this, including trying to silence actual mentally handicapped people that spoke in defense of Derpy.
Yamino is yet another example of someone who merely wears the concept of social justice as a trendy badge, rather than properly representing it. She’s another tumblr user trying to speak for others who would rather speak for themselves.
They weren’t raging against him because they didn’t want Derpy in the show, but because they didn’t believe the word a lowly animator (I’m serious, they didn’t think an animator would know if a character appeared in the finished animation) and were upset anyone would ask them to calm down over the edits.
You’re implying that the people complaining about Derpy are actually bronies.
People that don’t like or want Derpy in the show typically do not go by that namesake.
So, because Yamino was a jerk, it was OK for bronies to rage against a show animator for saying Derpy was still in the remaining s2 episodes?
@Background Pony #A0E5
The harassment was after Yamino got on her blog and talked shit about the fandom disliking the changes. To every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction.
If she didn’t kick the beehive, she wouldn’t have become the lightning rod of hate. Sorry, but that’s just something no one should do in this day and age on the internet. 4chan was looking for a punching bag and she made herself known at exactly the wrong time. It really does suck, yes, but she wasn’t exactly innocent in that kerfuffle, either.
The same goes for a lot of other certain tumblrinas these days that love to rag on the fandom. They can cry out for social justice all they want, but they’re a blade of grass in front of a boulder flying down a hill in comparison. I saw it a decade ago with the anime fandom, and I see it again here.
So you think all the cries of “retard” and “idiot” directed at anyone who didn’t like Derpy’s name or voice, regardless of whether they agreed with the changes, were justified? The threats made against Yamino and some others were reasonable? The insults left on the journal of an animator calling for calm because Derpy wasn’t being removed from other s2 episodes were just fine?
I love Derpy and think Hasbro’s edits to “The Last Roundup” were wrong, but that doesn’t change the fact that most of the pro-Derpy comments I saw once the changed episode was released were hateful, rude, and aggressive, and a good many of them distorted the issue or their opponents’ arguments.
Uh, excuse you? I don’t think you actually realize any of the things Yamino did during that debacle. People who supported Derpy were the ones being vilified, hon.
You need a roast.
(b-dum chh!)
In all honesty, I stopped defending the fandom near the beginning of Derpygate, when the majority of the fandom was vilifying or misrepresenting anyone and everyone who dared disagree with them. Not that I think we’re any worse than other fandoms, but we’re sure as shootin’ not any better.
As for Sombra, I thought he was fine for the role he had in the show. Sure, it would’ve been nice to have more development for him, but personally, that wasn’t one of the problems I had with “The Crystal Empire”.
Yeah. I love it when villains are looked at in detail with more insight on their personality and backstory.
Same here. I liked the way they did Sombra as the monster, but it would have been cool to see more of him as a normal(ish) pony with more lines through flashbacks or something.
true. I just think that they could have, or rather should have done more with him.
He was written well for the role he was given.
