Except, and here’s the thing, Spike is genuinely competent enough to be trusted with a firearm, meaning that letting Spike take care of a weapon isn’t all that stupid.

Given that Spike has fire breathe, I don’t think that firearm safety is a concept that eludes him.

That’s exactly what Twilight is afraid of: that Spike might get ahold of it, finagle the safety off, and hurt himself.
What if the kid figures out how to turn the safety off?
Flash does not comprehend gun safety, and thinks that a firearm is perfectly safe to leave around a child if the safety catch is on.
