The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@MeshGearFox
And the muggle will then promptly get murdered by the other dark wizards present, who can fire off Avada Kedavra as soon as their wands are drawn if they do so nonverbally. (Verbally, I’ll admit, will add about half-a-second to casting time) Just like if you pulled a gun on a group full of gunmen in real life: you’ll get the first shot off, yeah, but the retaliation will be quick and brutal.

Also, if you’re pointing a gun at someone and pull the trigger, most of the time you have pretty murderous intent anyway. Otherwise, your body will likely hesitate.

Self-defense, however, Avada Kedavra won’t be effective, as you lack murderous intent. However, that’s where a spell like “Accio Spinal Column” will come in handy.

“Avada Kedavra works just as well as a gun”

That’s the problem, it kind of doesn’t. You have to really /mean/ it for it to work. Guns are just… point and shoot.

Also you can’t really cast silently. If a muggle has a gun leveled at a wizard, they’d squeeze the trigger as soon as the wizard opened their mouth.

No, the books make it pretty clear that wizards are ignorant of Muggle technology (in one of the books, the Muggle Studies agent of the Ministry of Magic mentions that he can’t figure out how airplanes can stay in the air)

However, the Wizarding world generally doesn’t bother with studying Muggles past a token effort because magic spells are generally more effective than muggle technology. Broomsticks, teleportation, and the Floo network trump Muggle cars and planes, healing spells of all sorts are superior to modern medicine (at least when it comes to physical injury), Avada Kedavra works just as well as a gun, and the various mind-reading, mind-control, confusion, and human revealing spells can make cooridinated military efforts fall apart immediately, and tanks can be animated and turned against humans pretty easily. Since Muggles aren’t aware of the Wizarding world, there are no countermeasures against magic. The wizards keep themselves secret mostly because the wars that will result of being found out will cost far too many wizard and muggle lives to be worth it.

However, the rise of computer and communication technology (like the Internet) will likely mean the balance of power is going to shift towards Muggles pretty soon.

Given the condescending attitude most wizards have towards muggles, they probably hold onto the old ways more out of stubborness than complete ignorance of the existence of modern technology.

That’s the explanation I read. Mustn’t have been very ‘recent’ studies. I believe in the same text I read that they didn’t even know how a car worked… and that somehow related to the flying car thing in one movie.

Wizards only live in their own little world because had they lived outside it they would have killed themselves in their stupidity long ago.

The average wizard is more closely related to a lemming, or possibly a potato, than a human.

I thought they knew about them and how they worked, just never used them. Muggle Studies was a thing, so was a working knowledge of electricity.

Plus, Muggle Prime Ministers knew of the wizarding world.

They probably stay away from each other because of how they view their world. Its like believing in a god (which exists) but having the ability to travel to the same world without that god existing. Its… mind blowing.

Let me destroy Harry Potter for you.

Apparently the only reason the wizards and stuff didn’t use human technology such as guns is because they didn’t know about them….

They exist and everything according to the author, and would be totally overwhelming against magic, but since wizard and “muggle” society is separate… they don’t know about them.

Yeah.
