I saw it as the Mane Five following Twilight because they didn’t want one pony to risk her lives for their sake. Even Fluttershy.
Those seem like pretty tenuous bonds to me.
It’s not like there’s some sort of weird mating ritual behind freindship.
To be fair, Twilight became friends with the rest of the Mane 6 in the pilot pretty spontaneously.
I mean, the others only really followed her because they were suspicious of her knowing so much about Nightmare Moon.
That’s because adding the mane six tag is less work for the lazy
