Yeah, that’s my biggest issue with Flash animation, it reuses the same poses, animations, and expressions way too often.
I have to admit, I do like the ‘flexibility’ of hand-drawn animation more. Its fun to see the different looks and styles that the various artists give the ponies too.
If by “look good” you mean every character sing one of three cookie-cutter base models with colour, mane style, and butt tattoos being the only thing that separates them, then sure :)
Oh, don’t forget stock-animation-cycle 1, stock-animation-cycle 2, etc. :)
And also an art style where bright monotones are not just acceptable but appealing.
You’re right that the animation is okay by mid-80’s standards, considering that this era was the height of Filmation and their near-garbage quality (the only other game in TV toontown back then was Hanna-Barbera, and they were pretty bad too; Disney only came in later)
It’s really amazing how much television animation has pulled itself out of the gutter over the past three decades. MLP:FiM itself is the shining example of proof that Flash animation can look good, when it gets a budget and a dedicated team who know what they’re doing.
The character animation is (usually) good for 80s standards, if considering the variety of actions the ponies and other characters do, not to mention the sheer ever growing number of different character models and shapes for all the creatures they encounter.
I can certainly understand though, the lack of consistency is jarring compared to the constant perfection of body shapes, sizes, and so on, that Flash animation is capable of. Also, it seems like some episodes or story arcs have much better (or worse) animation than others.
The backgrounds are always consistently good though.
OLYMPIAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
