Background Pony Number 17
My Little Pony - 1992 Edition

I always figured Spike to be a sort of “child celebrity” in Canterlot when he was little. He was probably the first dragon that any pony had ever seen up close, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he was made to do a lot of public appearances to satisfy everyone’s curiosity. He would’ve grown up surrounded by attendants and had many friends (probably mostly “fair weather” ones enamored with his celebrity status), but not have a “real” family life to speak of.

He also knew Hoity Toity well enough to get him to come to Ponyville. He seems to have had something of a social life in Canterlot, unlike Twilight Sparkle.

I always assumed that Twilight just didn’t take Spike to visit her family. Mind you, she’s effectively broken contact with Shining Armor by the time that she moved to Ponyville at the latest, so I wouldn’t expect that Twilight saw her family that much, either.

Well, in the first episode Spike was going to give Moondancer a present at her party, that might imply he knows some ponies around Canterlot and isn’t treated as outcast only because he’s different.
Otherwise this means he is treated as outcast but tries to socialize anyway by going to pony parties uninvited and giving them presents to show that he’s a nice guy. But that’s probably not the case because he doesn’t have problems socializing in Ponyville, locals know him and accept. So it does seem like he wasn’t all alone in his pre-Ponyville days either.

I always find it sad, whenever spike says that.

Not only does it seem like Celestia wasn’t really his mom either (I mean, what kind of mother doesn’t get her son a gift, especially when that “mom” is a princess), but that means neither was twilight’s parents. Did the little guy really have anyone besides twilight, growing up?

The thing is, Spike doesn’t get presents from them on his birthday, something that strongly indicates against that.

He also doesn’t seem to think of them when it comes to family, or anything else.
