Oh crap your right
Dude, let it goooo… I mean, half the internet already made that joke already.
Besides, we don’t need to start another touchy debate here.
Too bad, it works better now that it ever did before
This was posted 6 years ago. So no.
Interesting. I feel as though there’s a great deal of importance to this subject, if people hope at all to be creatures motivated by reason rather than instinct, at any rate. I’ll certainly be reflecting upon it further.
Well, that get’s to that very tricky philosophical question about why the internal state of other people matters objectively or even if it does at all.
I think pain sucks and happiness is good. There’s no specification in that qualia that only MY pain and happiness matter, they just matter in general to me regardless, so I would prefer pain not to be and happiness to be in others as well as myself. As far as I can tell, from my personal experience, that’s qualitatively inherent in those experiences that I don’t care if it’s specifically me.
Difficult to explain, like telling someone what the color red looks like I guess. But people matter to me as an end unto itself, not a means to a personal end (like being nice to get into paradise rather than being nice for it’s own sake).
But I’ve fought often and hard to try to make things better (yes, even outside of the internet), but it’s like people just don’t want it. People are just solipsistic and (like you suggested) only care about what makes them feel good, even to the point that it will harm them personally eventually because they care more about themselves in the very moment (“that’s future Spike’s problem”). So I’m just tired and I don’t know anymore. I don’t even know if people are what I thought they were. I feel sometimes like they must not experience things in the same way, and therefore don’t experience pain or happiness as I know it either, because I don’t understand how someone could have experienced happiness and pain in their lives and then think it’s okay to do things like bully and beat the shit out of someone for being gay because “eww, gross, faggot”. So since I don’t know if people really experience things the same way as me anymore, it kinda doesn’t matter to me anymore.
Well, I was actually talking about philosophy. You see, it’s always seemed to me that if I were an atheist, it wouldn’t make much sense for me to worry about anything that didn’t pertain to my own self in some way. As such, the rest of the world could be in flames for all I care, as long as I’m happy in my own realm. Hypothetically, anyway.
I’m not trying to be inflammatory, I just think that position makes a lot of sense from that perspective.
That things like burden of proof and evidence based belief are less logically consistent than my giving up on people.
You doubt what?
Too late.
Don’t take the bait.
Doubt it.
