My headcannon is now that Buttons mom helped out at the Canterlot school for gifted unicorns (and possible earth pony and pegusi branches?) and has since retired from her prestegious job to care for her own family with pleanty of saveings and a spot ready and waiting for her should she ever wish to return.

It would make sense.
I think that he was cared foor by many nursemaids, who didn’t spend much time with them, because they either didn’t care or had other duties to attend to. Therefore he never really bonded with any of them, leaving him without a definite mother figure.
