Temperance as a cardinal virtue was more than just abstaining from drinking alcohol to the ancients (link below), and it’s more complex still through the history of the Tarot. One of the earliest interpretations was linking it to Time itself. The Christian tradition believed it to represent three things: the motion of life in the divine world, the combination of ideas that create morality in the intellectual world, and natural forces in the physical world. Waite’s interpretation includes household economy, moderation, frugality, management. Oddly enough, the reverse has been seen to mean that you will require the services of a priest.
