It’s still the second most reasonable, and so far most interesting, explanation. I can just imagine the upheaval it caused among the noble houses to have an Alicorn of non-Unicorn origin, disregarding that most Alicorns aren’t strictly of Unicorn heritage alone.
This is the first I’ve heard of the comics addressing Cadance’s alicornification. Which issue?

Some people have said that the books are considered canon, though a claim like that should be backed up with a statement from someone working on the show.

Yes it is, a comic was released explaining how Cadance got her horn.
