They can also move move in the normal direction horse legs move. This has led me to conclude that pony legs are in fact bendy-straws.

Meh, Pony forelegs bend that way million times in the three seasons and will bend that way million times in the 4th season as well. Their forelegs are more like arms without hands than just normal pony legs.
