They didn’t do that either. Some just didn’t do a particularly good job of hiding things behind the noise, so it was obvious what it was even when it didn’t work.

No, I mean I just can’t do them. Even in book or poster form. Ever since I was little, these things have simply not worked for me. Sometimes I can see what they’re supposed to be behind all the noise, but I never get the 3-d pop-out-thing to work.
 
That could be the problem. These things do NOT pop out at you, and the effect is more of a paralax one. Think Viewmaster toy, if I had to discrbe it its like looking at something just under the waterline. Yes there can be some finer detail, but it depends mostly on the background, allowing for it.
