So there’s a bit of context for this image. Hofstadter is currently discussing interpretations for formal systems, specifically the pq-system, which describes additions <- spoiler since it’s a puzzle in the original book. The rules are as follows:
  1. Any sentence with the form Xp-qX- is valid, with X being an arbitrary amount of dashes (-).
  2. If the sentence XpYqXY is valid, then so is XpY-qXY-, with X and Y being an arbitrary amount of dashes.
Now, what does the system do? Have fun figuring that out!

Y’alls Fancy Mathematics told me that a blackhole is really just when an object’s mass to volume ratio, or density, is so massive in mass’s favor that it sucks in your measuring device.
