AH JAPAN, The land of the PEDOS.
I’m split on this. You have a point with the artwork part as that can be pretty iffy to say the least.
On the other hand, when I buy a Manga translated into english, I’d prefer not having to refer to a index page for it or look in the space between the panels to see what this SFX translates too when they could just flat out replace said Japanese characters (the writing, not the ones in the story itself). It can break my immersion into the story at worse. Even when I can ignore, it’s not what I’d call a good thing.
Well, that’s fair. I mean it’s not like I’m boycotting Viz, I just don’t like them much. But I must admit that I have bought their translations of Loveless since volume 9 since they happened to get the license after Tokyopop died. And I’m glad they got rid of that patronizing “Read this way!” crap.
Acutally, I’ve thought about it, and I think I’ve come up with another reason as to why I might be biased towards Viz: I really love their dubs of Naruto, Bleach, and Death Note (especially the last one).
Fair enough, that makes a lot of sense (even if I don’t quite agree)
Funny, I feel exactly the opposite way about sound effects. Ideally I’d like it to be done the way Viz used to do, when they didn’t touch sound effects at all.
But anyway, I checked one of my Dark Horse translations, and sound effects are left in with little glosses next to them (eg. タッタッタッタッタッタ would have the word “dash” next to it or something similar, in a small font of course).
I don’t like sound effects translated Viz-style precisely because they don’t mesh with the original artwork. Especially in cases where, say, a sound effect frames a character, physically affects a character, or breaks the fourth wall generally, the artist has huge scope to get just the right shape and presentation (font is a big deal here too). I would much rather see how the original artist pulled it off than some random translator’s effort. If that means mundane sound effects are left in too, so be it, because they are also artistically meaningful. I’m perfectly fine with glosses.
In short: speech bubbles are fair game, but don’t fuck with the rest.
Poor Kirby gets the angry eyes treatment every the time.
I think Viz would be better because they actually take the time and effort of translating the sfx, and making them match the original artistry, instead of just leaving them as-is with an asterisk and a note in the margins or whatever, which is such a lameass copout method, I feel. Does Dark Horse do that? If so, I’d honestly be fine with them too.
I’m hoping that Viz eventually licenses the manga (because I doubt IDW would do the translation, considering they’re making an American equivalent)
EU/JP: Yeah! Everything is Awesome!
US: YOU’RE IN MY WORLD NOW, BITCH!
Probably that the MLP IDW comics are awesome and the MLP manga are little children fodder.
Otherwise I don’t get it.
