Cheap high production values and contrast with the source material?
I guess that’s part of the draw for me, that it’s so unlike FiM, but still has matching visuals and audio (songs, sound effects).

@Align
That wasn’t the point of my message. I was saying that if you took the characters and setting of FiW and gave it a visual facelift, you’d never be able to tell that it came from FiM. Pretty much every other parody and abridged series out there can at least boast that much.

Or, to put it in other words, if FiW was put into a textual format (with all the jokes magically working just as well as they do in the video), you’d never be able to say that it was a FiM-related work. And if it’s not related, then why even bother using FiM assets?

I’d still watch it, I really enjoy the weirdness. At this point it’s more like I found out about it through FiM than it being actually relevant.

@Align
Well then if it’s not a parody, and if it’s not an abridged series, then what is it? Because I want each and every one of you to be honest with me, if you took the exact same stories, characters, and setting in FiW and gave them a visual facelift, would you even be able to tell that it was connected to FiM? I know I wouldn’t.

I don’t think you can call FiW an abridged parody, really.
It doesn’t follow the original plot more than the tiniest bit, so it can’t be called an abridged series.
…And it doesn’t make fun of the source material as much as it creates its own, so it’s not so much a parody either.

CiS pokes fun at the original in a good way, but it doesn’t practically spawn its own mythos like FiW did with all its weirdness.

@Ebalosus
I’d also suggest watching his newest video on Camaraderie is Supernatural, as both he and I feel that it’s the best MLP parody/Abridged series out there.

It’s been said before, and I’ll say it again. Doing bad comedy “ironically” DOES NOT MAKE UP FOR THE FACT THAT IT IS STILL BAD COMEDY. If anything that just makes it worse, as the creators are acknowledging the fact that the jokes they’re making are unfunny piles of trash, and yet they keep making them!
Here, in the video this links to someone else does a review and full analysis of FiW that’s far better than what I can put into text. He also did a followup video (found here) that cleans up a couple of the responses he then got about the first from FiW fans.

The “bad parts” seem like they’re obviously being done ironically and in a self-aware way. This doesn’t always lead to great comedy (agreed, this one was one of the weaker showings), but for the most part it’s effective.

@Ebalosus
Comedy may be subjective but it can still be done poorly. It just seems like a lot of people here either block out the bad parts of FiW’s humor or just have really crappy taste. I, personally, assume the former.

If they wanted to make a Snowdrop parody they may as well have just done that…

Didn’t think much of that part, the rest of it was corny but silly, so it had some funny moments.

Overall, I’ll agree with someone above and say this is one of the weaker instalments from this series.

Well duh :P

As I’ve said before, comedy is highly subjective, thus there is a good chance that what I like may not be what you like, and that’s fine.

See, with you around, I don’t need to bash FiW, since you do enough bashing for the both of us :)

Also, I’ve noticed a somewhat disconcerting correlation between people whom like FiW and people whom dislike/hate Twilicorn…which flummoxes me. Maybe it’s because I’m a filfy un-american foreigner, but the usual reasons people bash MMC are also present in FiW; so why are they willing to criticise MMC, all the while loving FiW for doing similar things…

…Granted, I’ve seen the same thing in the gaming sphere with both ME3 and Bioshock Infinite. Both very guilty of very similar flaws in terms of narrative and gameplay, yet while lots of people (at least the smart ones) rightly bash ME3 for these faults, far fewer bash Infinite even though it has similar faults. I’ve seen people with the gall to criticise the convoluted ending of ME3 in one sentence, to defend the ending of Infinite in the very next sentence!
