Oh I do like the Sparta/Pegasus analogy. The Spartans probably wouldn’t have just assumed the girl children were weaker than boys though. Certainly “unfit” children of both sexes would have been killed, which wasn’t so rare at the time, but Spartan girls and women actually received better status, food, education and freedoms than those in neighbouring Greek states, as I understand it.
