Though TBF, I did actually explain that the self part was hasbro’s marketing department.
Somehow I don’t think he counts as a “self-insert OC.” I highly doubt he’s based off of Meghan MacCarthy. :P
That’s because He’s pretty much just a bad Self Insert OC that appears out of nowhere, does little to nothing of value, has no personality outside of your stereotypical done to death “please and thank you” over idealized “perfect” love interests people are sick to death of seeing in modern media, and yet somehow manages to gain “crush” status with a well developed main character. Flash is hated for the same reason Self Inserts and bad OCs are hated: Because it IS a self insert with the “self” part being the Hasbro marketing department.
In other words: he’s hated because he’s pretty much what a 14 year old would write as a love interest in a bad fanfiction.
Btw, I’ve never liked the Waifu jokes. It got old faster than the GAK meme.

I was talking about completely removing the crush storyline and only ever giving him background appearances.
Flash’s design would have made him very popular as a BG pony.
I think it’s better this way.
Imagine how much of a shitstorm it’d be if Flash went from background character to love romance in just a few episodes.
Plus, the fan pandering shitstorm would accompany it.
See, if they were being helpful, they’d mention filters. And complain in the forums. And use a colour-text combination that’s readable.

Flash would have been very popular if he was only given background appearance. This is how our fandom works.
When the show makers put an incidental character in, and don’t fill the details the fandom adopt them and make a full character out of them. But we expect major characters to have a well developed personality because the the more screen time a character gets the more it will have to compare to the mane 6.
Flash also have a role that works against him. He is quite literally a “bond girl”. Problem is that our society is is much more expecting monogamy from woman, so if twilight developed a crush on him people think that the show will have him as her Constant love interest. Something that a. was absent from the show thous far. and b. Flash Sentry isn’t nearly as well developed to pull off.
Alot of other popular characters are a tad bland to ironically. DJ PON-3/Vinyl (a BG character I do like admittedly) appears only once for a few seconds in each season of the show, yet everyone adores her, makes up backstories for her, ‘ships her with characters she’s never even interacted with, debate what eye color she has under her sunglasses, and such. (Same goes for alot of other nameless background characters.)
Brad has had more screen-time then her, actually talks, and did get Twilight out of trouble at one point in the E.G. movie, yet he’s loathed by all.
Only idiots get mad over memes.
