Why you should love Applejack and not hate her. It convinced me that she’s underrated.

You know what I’m starting to think? maybe bronies have gone about this the wrong way.
Maybe, just maybe, we don’t need EVERY ONE of the Main 6 to have challenges in each of their episodes that are written in the exact same format. Do we really need every one of them to have flaws and thus, share the exact same base for a character in the show?
Let’s just have Applejack be herself and not a product of a story.

All of my this~

The better episodes from now on are definitely going to have be a bit more complex and high concept, seeing as most of the meaningful character development was already accomplished in Seasons 1 & 2, I’d think.

hm… Well, None of these episodes focus their entirety on drama, obviously, not even the two parter ones.

What I was saying here is that the show can produce these moments to compliment the stories being told, not to replace them. That’s what I also meant by having Applejack be her own character in an environment that tests her for who she is, not being placed in situations and constantly given new characteristics to work with.

I get that it takes more work, but that’s how we got such excellent episodes such as Suited for success, an episode which relies almost entirely on telling a story surrounding Rarity’s already established character.

It’s all a matter of opinion in this regard. I tend to think of PyHD as one of the strongest deliveries of the show, as well as RD’s I hate being all alone and Rarity’s moment in Sisterhooves Social, because you could really feel their hearts wrench at the realization.

So, yeah.. This point is debatable.

actually, the more dramatic the show got was during the season long episodes. I know there’s plenty of those in season 2’s season opener and closer episodes, but there’s still the argument in Putting your Hoof Down, Rarity’s realization in Sisterhooves Social, Fluttershy’s wingpower scene in Hurricane Fluttershy and even a small moment in Mysterious Mare do Well, the “I hate being all alone” moment.

You can’t dismiss all these.. they’re all very genuine emotions and great examples of good drama.

it kinda has a bit of both though.. that’s what kind of made it so good, despite being a family show..
I wouldn’t say Prince of Bel-Air deserves to be called solely comedy and for laughs, simply because that’s the main tone.

If a show like this could get away with some of its more dramatic moments, which it did at times, that can only be a sign of talent and in that regard, FIM is no different. It gets away with comedy, drama, character driven stories, etc.

that works too, obviously, but that’s only the standardised version of writing a character that is generally believed to always work, aka, the very cliché and generic type, the kind we see in episodes like Simple ways.
The thing is, you can have any kind of character / personality work well if you know how to write it and in a show that has so many different types of personalities for our main characters, I believe such a talent for writing should be a requirement.

Personally, I would have Rainbow Dash as Honesty, Applejack as Generosity (Got a whole farm to spare), and Rarity as Loyalty.

Of course, they would need different scennes at the Everfree Forest in the second episode.

@Evowizard25
The element of “WAAAGH!!!”, duh.

Now, if I may paraphrase two quotes which I find somewhat fitting to this discussion. On the one hand:
“Look at the mare! I’ve got nothing to work with! If someone said to me, ‘That Applejack, what’s she like?’ I’d say ‘She’s orange.’ And if they said, ‘No, but what’s she really like?’ I’d say, ‘She’s orange and she’s got a hat.’”

On the other:
“You know why you can’t get a handle on me? Because I’m an ordinary pony. I’m normal. I’m just an average earth pony who takes each day as it comes. I’m not particularly chatty, pretty or clever, but you know what? I get by. I manage. So don’t dismiss me just because —unlike all your friends in Ponyville— my personality isn’t the product of a crippling psychological disorder.”

P.S.: don’t take this seriously.

Aj is the greatest pony out of all of them, she is always honest and its hard for her to lie, the fact im saying is that she sticks to her element then the others, Rainbow acts like a douche to her friends and Rarity made spike give up a gem on his birthday.
Also i think she is one of the top 3 mane 6 who had the most episodes about them self, Rarity didn’t have an episode about herself since 2011.
Hrulka

why do people honestly give AJ any credit?
Having her do good things does not make her an engaging character.
Honestly, giving a character good things to do and putting them into those situations is easy.
Making a character have good episodes, that’s the challenge. And AJ has none.
