This is 4 years old man, and talking about the fandom that adores luna, especially since what little we did know about her just had everyone add to her character whatever they liked.
And stop and think for a second why in show the characters would love celestia, the mare that kept equestria peaceful and prosperous for over 1000 years.
Of course all that is just fluff but at least the show itself is consistant in that regard even if they use all the alicorns now (including twilight) for worfing.

It’s no mystery. Luna is the more interesting one. Luna’s much more interesting and has an actual character arc. From an in-universe point of view, there’s nothing wrong with her, but as characters let’s look at what we got: Luna was underappreciated. Jealousy drove her evil, and she was banished! Now she’s back, and first people are afraid of her and now that’s not what she’s going for, and she gets those lovely adorkable moments, and we find out more about her role as time goes on like the dreamwalking thing…
…meanwhile, Celestia raises the sun and once a season shows up to provide some exposition.
Gee, I WONDER who fans are gonna latch on to more.
(Still can’t believe it took until season seven - seven!! - for “Celestia as an actual character” moments to become a thing. But, better late than never!)
Brilliant points and all, but I could do without the silly headcanon that Shining Armor was adopted and that Celestia provides Spike with secret information.

The Leadership Secrets of Princess Celestia (with thanks to Niccolò Machiavelli)
Be Ruthless - Princess Ceestia is VERY DANGEROUS
A Princess’s main duty is to defend her nation. She does what she has to do and does not hesitate to act. She has turned her opponents to stone (who else besides Discord?). She disembodies powerful non-godlike opponents such as King Sombra. She has banished her sister Princess Luna - a fellow demigod in the moon for 1000(!) years. By doing so, she demonstrated putting the needs of Equestria above her own happiness. She is constantly involved in matters of state and diplomacy, taking personal charge of administration of her nation, and checking up on both local officials and meeting with leaders from all over her land, both in person at their residencies and at Canterlot. She also recognizes unknown dangers and attempts to defend against them, while trying to exploit opportunities that can provide rewards balanced against risks (such as the reacquisition of the Crystal Empire).
A Princess keeps her friends close and her enemies even closer!
Princess Celestia tries very hard to befriend and win the affections and actual love and respect of Twilight and to co-opt her into Equestria’s cause. Princess Celstia possibly arranged for the Sparkles to adopt a unicorn whose primary spell is a defensive shell (to protect others while Twilight learns?). The princess also arms Twilight and her friends with some of the most powerful magic she knows of, and relies on them regularly to defend Equestria, but carefully manages the information they have about the various threats to it. She also keeps the elements of magic in her own safe keeping and only hands them out when they are needed. It should also be noted that in consultation with her sister she carefully selects tasks and challenges for Twilight and her friends to accomplish both to prove themselves and to develop Twilight’s leadership qualities, while keeping her under a tight leash.
Spike the Dragon can instantly communicate with Celestia warning her of danger, and vice versa. For instace the Princess heeded Spikes warnings regarding her to the point of IMMEDIATELY rushing to Ponyville when she realizes her protege is becoming dangerously neurotic. Apparently Spike can keep secrets - for instance she hid the very existence of the dangerous mirror pool from Twilight, but told her agent Spike exactly where a book on the dangerous artifact is located should it be needed. Spike has a good sense of right, wrong, and has been instructed to warn Celestia if her charge becomes unbalanced. Long term Spike represents a potential alliance with a dangerous and powerful species that is both long lived and hard for ponies to deal with.
A good Princess is guileless, but she can omit facts when necessary, or even mislead.
Princess Celestia allows Twilight out of her direct supervision, but sends Spike along - as a test to assess if Twilight is up to the challenge of defeating a superior foe with the assistance of others, and specifically instructs her to make friends, perhaps knowing that only in this way can Nightmare Moon be defeated, and her sister restored. She does not mention Phillomena is a Phoenix. She does not state what she is doing or where she is going or why things happen, except in general terms. She treats information like gold, sparingly giving it out on a need to know basis while using the information others give her to keep tabs on her nation. When called on this, she responds by saying “all you had to do is ask…”, or saying “all I said was…”. One could view it as either brilliant or passive aggressive, but careful management of others perceptions is a core aspect of successful leadership. She also accepts advice, criticism and has a sense of humor, while maintaining a degree of equanimity.
Princess Celestia is prudent, but decisive.
She makes alliances, generally only with those weaker than she is. She does this with Discord after he is turned to stone twice and threatened with it in the future. She also does this with her own sister who is first exiled and then brought down not by Celestia, but by her student and her friends. She also always takes sides, rather than remaining neutral. When she looses an argument or is proved wrong, she admits it, appologises, states her recognition of the mistake and moves on.
One could argue she also does this with Twilight and others in her land. She also allow others to act on her behalf instead of micro managing them, and recognizes the need her land has for powerful defenses, and is even willing to try to make allies out of former enemies if it can be done safely (Luna, Discord). When a Twilight grew powerful she offered a continuing alliance, relying on the consistency of her aims, her reputation and her past example to forge that alliance.
Princess Celestia has realistic vision of her
Duty and Does it.
Princess Celestia tries to exercise what control she has to establish the strongest and most peaceful and prosperous nation she can, by focusing on realistic objectives, even if they are long term. She has a long term vision for her land including developing the talents of potentially powerful assets in the long term like Spike and Twilight. She selflessly honors both the traditions of her land, and tries to provide opportunities for her people to involve themselves with her and her government while showing them how to act by providing uplifting and unifying themes and activities (Hearts Warming eve, the Gala), even if she does not enjoy them herself. She performs her duty AND Lunas (after her banishment) for over 1000 years, and tries to make it a spectacle for her people. She may bathe in the adoration and glory, but she seems to want everyone to enjoy the celebrations.
In short the Princess is an excellent leader, dangerous to her enemies, loyal to those worthy of loyalty, and gifted with foresight and a good deal of innate ability. She is not perfect, but actually does try to be the type of being she hopes others will strive to be, and she leads by example.
How about this; Twilight may have been right, but her reasoning was wrong. Twilight said that ‘Cadence’ was evil because she didn’t act exactly like she did when Twilight was a filly, or recognize the incredibly embarrassing dance they used to do together. All of her observations as to why she was, were able to be excused by the fact that she was about to be married.
My question to you would be; What would happen if Chrysalis hadn’t impersonated Cadence and she still acted like that? Would you forgive that kind of action?
This too. It still annoys me somewhat that Celestia didn’t apologise to Twilight for doubting her during the changeling crisis.
Everything said here and then some.
I’ll also add that I think Luna’s popularity is due to her having (show-wise, at least) more characterisation than her sister
These days, Luna’s appearances feel like blatantly forced fanservice. And for as much as I love pandering to the fandom, I prefer it when it’s tasteful. I’d rather they not put Luna in the show at all if all she does is stand around and do nothing and STILL give three fourths of the fandom a boner. Guys, froth at the mouth for a character that actually does something.
Ridiculous.
Maybe i am passionate about defending Celestia, i just love the potential the character has.
You said what the problem is, unlike Luna who had character development we mostly only see Celestia used as a tool in the story instead of a character.
And to top it off shes probably used to teach the children how you have to listen to your government or some other such stuff.
Limiting her even more, sometimes i fear we will never see proper character development for Celestia, but then it grinds my gear when people blame the lack of it on the character itself.
And Luna had way more screen time then then Celestia did, she had a whole episode.
Im to lazy to go and count their screentime or something such but i bet Luna beats Celestia by more then 10 minutes in total.
I can tell you’re very passionate about defending Celestia, and I think this argument over the apology is distracting from the larger point.
Throughout the series, Celestia has been presented as the perfect mother-figure: patient, all-knowing, and almost infallable. I don’t know how well this works for the target audience. Older fans seem to dislike the presentation. That’s why Celestia has had very negative copies like Trollestia.
And yes, events like A Canterlot Wedding receive special attention because they are opportunities to flesh out her character, though I didn’t see that happen. And I want her to be a well-rounded character because I am a fan.
Luna enjoys greater development despite less screen time. Luna Eclipsed and Sleepless in Ponyville did great things to advance her character and endear her to the audience. But liking Luna doesn’t translate to hating Celestia.
Raise the moon?
WTF does luna do?
And then she ends up having a more prominent and meaningful role than her sister, who is now relegated to even less than a supporting role than ever before. I guess when you have pinker princesses to sell toys, the only-slightly-pink-princess gets thrown to the side.
Just because she did not apologize on screen it means she and the others besides AJ didnt apologize for it at all?
Celestia’s wasnt any worse then any of the others so dont see how it was an error in judgment for her but not the others. Or does anyone think she should have went “Twilight might just be right even though shes just being jealous, lets execute the stressed bride!”
Thats one thing ill never get, people love to give their headcanons a chance by saying “it could (have) happen(ed)!” but for such other things they deny it if it didnt happen on screen. Meh
The lack of the apology was part of the overall image I’ve seen throughout the series. It receives special attention because that was the one time in the series we’ve seen Celestia make an error in judgment, whereas the others have made mistakes and apologized.
Although special props go to Applejack for being the only pony who actually did apologize.
People still bitch about there being no in show apology to Twilight by Celestia?
And ignore everyone else not apologizing to her, yeah…
When so many people can relate to the “tried to kill all of the world” thing.
Yeah i know its not about that, but people always ignore that and go “oh poor Luna” when it was her own choices that lead to it all.
Or shes really just so much more popular since shes blue and not some lighter color? I admit even i like that one, but still prefer Celestias white.
Still the biggest issue for me are the crazy luna “fans”, i imagine they have to “downgrade” Celestia because Luna lost her character in the same episode she gained it.
But associations is what makes me think “ewww” first when i think of the words “Luna fan”, i know not all are so bad and im sure the fanatics are a small minority, but from my experience their usually quiet when its bashing Celestia time so leaves you only to see an extreme of opinions and thats it. (Still for me thats still not as bad as some “unity” groups that claim that if you just prefer one over the other, you actually hate the other _ )
At the end of the day we dont know almost anything about both Luna and Celestia, Hasbro better make a spin off series about them.
I like Luna better but don’t hate Celestia, this alone proves your statement false.
Way to group everyone who likes Luna under one banner.
Y’know, not all of us believe that, idiot.
