I remember reading that in Thailand they were sometimes steamed like lobster. There isn’t much of a cuisine built around them because they rarely show up in traps. The taste is reportedly a mix between crab & lobster.
I’ve actually seen a few of these. On an oilfield job in the Gulf of Mexico the ROV crew laid a trap on bottom (in about 2000ft of water) just to see what they’d catch. The sub brought up two of these in the trap. Nobody tried to cook them…we set them free and presumably they sank back to bottom.
As I learned shortly after making that post.
So now the question is: can it be eaten? Or is it just a cuddle fetish in Japan…
Bathynomus giganteus …they’re a giant isopod that lives on the deep ocean floor.
You’re thinking of a different species of isopod. And even then, that species doesn’t just suck blood, it eats the inside of the fish’s mouth. So technically it would be bloated with fish meat.
