“So, be friends…or we’ll turn you into a statue for all eternity. You know, Twilight, I’m not sure that’s sending the right kind of message…”
“You know Sunset, there comes a point where the only one you have to blame for the consequences of your actions is yourself. I mean, did you know that we’re on good terms with pretty much all of the changelings now? Except one of course. It’s funny in a way that the queen of an entire group of shapeshifters is also the one who absolutely refuses to change in any way shape or form. But she was only ever in it for herself anyway. She misled all of her subjects and kept them starving and at her mercy for who knows how long, and then instead of making amends or trying to make up for it or doing literally anything to show she wanted to be better, like some ponies I know did, she doubled down on revenge against basically everyone.”
“Oh. Well, that does seem pretty bad. But what about…?”
“Tirek? Sure, we can talk about how he sees friendship. Go ask Discord, see what he thinks of his loyal and true friend. I mean, you do realize we came pretty close to losing that first fight with him, right? And had he not backstabbed someone who thought he was his friend, we might not be having this conversation right now. But here’s the funny part, again. Tirek saw firsthand the power that friendship grants, and cannot possibly not know that he lost because he betrayed one himself. And yet… and yet… despite all that, he still went back to his old tricks of stealing power and using it to try and conquer Equestria.”
“…So what’s the filly’s story?”
“Oh we were absolutely completely nice to her. She was befriended by the crusaders, I made her my assistant, she helped out at my school and was treated well by all the teachers and students… we were all of us nothing but kind and welcoming to her, and she in turn never really believe or accepted any of it. It was all fake. Nothing but backhanded compliments and twisted kind words. We opened our hearts to her, but all she ever saw in us was a means to an end. She came frighteningly close to fracturing the delicate ties I tried to establish within and outside Equestria, and the second she had a chance she joined the cause to try and do it a second time!”
“Huh… that does all sound pretty bad, actually.”
“But here’s the real kicker, Sunset. They could have done it on their own. They could have discovered friendship and what it actually means to have someone connected to you like that. They were on the precipice of something great and wonderful and they could feel that they were, and they rejected it! They stood on the edge of being better and decided, all of them, that they were better off going it alone, down the same road they had all tried before.”
“Ok. I see your point.”
“Seriously, some ponies apparently like to pretend that this is just out of the blue and completely undeserved. Like we never gave any of them a chance to do better or at the very least stop trying to drain all our magic or conquer Equestria or something. But they made their choice. And we made one too.”
“Fair enough. So you think you’ll ever let them out?”
“Maybe in a thousand years or so. That does seem to be pretty standard around here.”
Sunset: What about “Sombra”?

Chrysalis is really good at self-deception. She convinced herself that her subjects were “corrupted”, and that friendship was some sort of “disease”. She insists that she doesn’t need any-pony…but goes to pieces when she is all alone. She was also Queen for a thousand years, so admitting that she had been wrong for a millennium is hard for her to accept. There are definitely issues to deal with concerning her; she has the classic symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder, with a love of violence and control. They’d need to go a lot further than a pretty speech, and it would certainly be a something that couldn’t be resolved neatly at the end of the episode. But I think there is stuff to work with.

You know, I’m always puzzled when fans insist Chrysalis “misled” her subjects. At no point is it shown that she knew sharing love would trigger a change, and seems to be in denial about what had happened.
“Misled” could also be in reference to the fact that her initial “oh, I’m just trying to get food for my subjects” claims ended up being much much more about making herself powerful. Just saying.
Also, let’s say for argument’s sake that she actually was completely in the dark about the fact that sharing love would completely eliminate the changelings’ endless hunger and transform them into their new forms. If everything she did was really about taking care of her subjects, if that was actually what she cared about most of all, than, having witnessed the change that was possible and the better lives all her changelings could be leading, why would she continue to fight against it? The only real explanation is that it was never actually about anyone but her. Heck, she was offered a chance to be the “the leader your subjects deserve” by the poster pony for revenge is a bad idea herself, Starlight Glimmer, and her response was to swear revenge anyway.
Long and the short of it is, she had plenty of chances. All three of them did. And they chose poorly.

You’re completely right, of course. Not only did he manipulate them, he used the threat of death to force them to go along with his plans, then condemned them for a crime he made them commit despite being a “reformed” villain himself.

@OtherFritz
They were manipulated by Discord from the beginning, and the guy who brought them together got to decide their punishment. Plus, they did too good a job of making the trio likable. They were teaming up to get rid of Grogar, who was very unlikable, so we ended up on their side. They should have realized when making the finale that it would upset fans who had gotten invested in their story. Plus, the ponies themselves seemed increasingly self-righteous as the series went on, or had to re-learn the same lessons they should already know by now. There were some good episodes in season 9, but I felt they should have wrapped by the end of season 7, the last two seasons felt so uneven.

Here’s a better message: “we’ll turn you into a statue for all eternity regardless of whether you want to be friends”.

But it didn’t since Sunset already change the error her ways cause she’s completely not like those two jerks as well as that spoiled little brat.
