Meh.
Beats By Dre gets a lot of flack it doesn’t deserve due to their fans’ misinterpretation of the slogan saying “the best sounding headphones of all-time”. Beats never made such a proclamation to begin with.
I admit, “the way artists’ intended you to hear” was pretty misleading to me when the line 1st came out when I was 14.
But 5 years later, I’ve definitely obtained enough knowledge to know the distinct differences between that & “the best audio ever”.
Basically,
Professional Musician ≠ Audiophile or Audio Technician
I’m man enough to admit that there’re cheaper headphones that provide better clarity & audio detection when compared to Beats (e.g. Sol Republic, AKG & Sennheiser)
But different people have different standards & budgets when it comes to attempting to receive their own interpretation of “superior audio”. & I’m no different.
When it comes to headphones, I aim for great
Audiophiles’ll definitely include audio detection as well as the goddamn lows, highs & mid ranges.
But those aren’t in my personal standards.
I spend over 90% of my music-listening time on my iPhone & Beats passes all my personal standards when it comes to delivering great music.
I know that’s considerably ludicrous for audiophiles & all. But again, I’m not that much of an audiophile to begin with. & lemme explain a lil’ further.
The AKGs I’ve tried at the store had a ridiculously puny volume limit (at 100% volume, I could still hear a lot of terrible ambient noise ‘round me).
Not worth the approx. HK$4000 (Yes, more pricy than the Beats Pros & yet they suck. Hard to believe, huh?) if I can’t enjoy this portably with my phone.
& the Sennheisers I’ve tried made this awesome dubstep song sound absolutely terrible (like a goddamn tape recorder).
I know those issues’ll be made up for when I decide to professionally monitor mixes on the computer.
But I’ve sat with them long enough to claim I’ll never use them for my own personal music-listening pleasure.
So I’ve tested the Beats Pros with my iPhone long enough to claim they provide great clarity, bass-response, instrument separation & volume limitations (At 100%, these are ludicrously loud. Loudest headphones I’ve ever tried to date. I love it!).
Therefore, they’re a complete package in my personal standards.
They’re definitely the best in the Beats By Dre line (not even the new 2013 Studios could outdo this).
& the advanced functionalities make great saves in terms of convenience when compared to all the superior-audio-delivering headphones tend to lack.
& so far my only complaint goes to the goddamn (over)price(d) tag. But overall, they’re great headphones imo.
To conclude, I stand on both sides of the spectrum here.
I’m definitely wise enough to know I should buy & use cheaper professional headphones intended for studio-monitoring (e.g. ATH M50s. Never tried ‘em but I’ve been told they’re great) in order to monitor mixes & ensure no useless ambient noise’ll be recorded in the final mix.
But when it comes to just attempting to enjoy my music, I’m definitely willing to spend an extra ludicrous HK$3500 on a pair of Beats Pros.

While Bose used to do some good engineering they’ve gone down the dual reflex path for all their speakers/hi-fis which are inherently a bit rubbish compared to eg transmission lines. Fancy hi-fi vendor like B&O rather than a sensible choice imo.

I totally agree beats are crap.
I am not defending beats; both they and monster were brands started up for fashion purposes, not audio engineering purposes. Go buy headphones from people who have 50 years of experience doing it right if you want headphones that sound good.

All these ‘vanity’ headphones with branding etc have typically shit audio quality compared to anything where someone has spent a few years figuring it out. If you want headphones for the bus with good isolation, go buy some Sennheiser in-ears like the CX300s - good enough, not superb, but good enough and sensibly priced and since they’re in-ears you get good isolation. If you want good listening headphones for your office/home, go for higher-end Sennheisers or mid-level Beyerdynamics.

I use Audio-Technica ATH-M50’s way better then beats for a cheaper price. lol u silly defending beats especially after what they did to monster.

I’m afraid to say you’ve never been exposed to anything but crap headphones. Sure as fuck can’t magic a button up to unfuck crap headphones.
