An innoncent question, yet when young Dinky Hooves opens a can of worms when she tries to find out about her heritage, and revealing a dark secret about Derpy. Soon this young filly will not just be looking for a daddy…but her mommy as well?
 
Chapter 1: Secrets And Lies
 
Derpy and Dinky have a row. A blurted out insult “You are not my mommy!” followed by a heated argument between Derpy and Golden Harvest about how to raise Dinky reveal a secret history - essentially, either of them may potentially be her mother!
 
Chapter 2 - The Colt That Ran Away
 
Dinky searches for her dad at the Town Archives. After acquiring a blurred photo portraying a gray unicorn, she is less certain than ever who her real father is - Written Script, Ponet, Pokey Pierce or the mysterious First Doctor Whooves?
 
…and so on until the last chapter where everyone realizes that even though anyone in town could potentially be Dinky’s parents and grandparents due to the complicated chain of events that transpired before her birth, it does not really matter because her real family is the one that takes care of her. Aww.

This is pretty much the joke I have set up for these two in one of my fics. Neither one knows their true relationship with each other, and they only stay together just because.
 
I preferred that over complying with fanon, while at the same time making it their schtick that everyone was familiar with.

Another possible explanation is that Written and Carrot babysit Dinky. Her being their daughter is not the only way you can interpret that stuff in the background.

And that is why no-one knows who Dinky’s father is. Derpy does not remember. I mean she honestly does not remember. She does not remember being pregnant or anything, so we can only hope she didn’t kidnap her or something. Ponies usually let it go, because they are afraid shit’d turn into a weird mix of 50 First Dates and Memento if they insisted.
