I was just reminded of this fucked up scene. What did she even do? Splatter that kitten’s guts in front of those children? That’s graphic as fuck especially for MLP standards?

Chrysalis suffered a disgusting case of character decay ever since Season 6. From a cool interesting villain she gradually turned into a psychopath who lives in the woods and talks to logs and tree stumps. Sort of an Equestrian version of late Margaret Lanterman.
But on second thought, FiM jumped the shark shortly after Season 4. Even the screenwriters were aware of that, and included a fitting visual pun in Episode 100. But instead of trying to set things right, they just decided to follow the path of decay. No, I don’t want to say that there weren’t any good episodes or good new characters since Season 5, but generally the show was in a state of decline ever since Meghan McCarthy introduced the pseudo-communist crazy horsie known to us as Starlight Glimmer.
Therefore, I can’t say for sure whether Queen Chrysalis is a cool villain with honorable traits, crazy psychopath or an irredeemable sadistic bitch. It all depends on the timescale. Before she lost her hive she could have some redeemable qualities, but the screenwriters decided to introduce a strange puzzling conception, that a changeling can supposedly be either a soulless sadistic monster or turn into a glamurous brightly-colored hipster bug. While Thorax is happy with his new appearance, I’m happy for him to. But there should have been an option for a changeling to keep the previous appearance without remaining evil.
I should stop now, I think. That’s too much of text.

I fail to remember ANY canon scene from FiM in which Chrysalis would be such a nefarious creature as in the IDW comics.
“Enough! Or the dragon’s wings get plucked!”
Seriously? Show!Chrysalis gleefully threatened to rip a kid’s wings off in front of his loved ones… only to then charge up a killing blow for all of them immediately thereafter, and it’s indicated she wanted to torture Starlight for revenge, among others ala “destroying them can wait, we should have fun with our ‘guests.’”
…So I’m thinking this is isn’t far off.
(and no, “lost her marbles” doesn’t really count when she showed basically no signs of insanity after the first act of Frenemies, in any episode after)
Even as far back as her debut, she could be pointlessly sadistic on multiple levels, with the biggest example of such being to banish Twilight despite getting her to think she was wrong about her, because she “had” to twist the knife.

As much as losing her hive affected her, it should be noted it’s a valid interpretation she tried to completely replace them with an entirely different species… something the show backed up twice, whether in S8 or S9.
Queen Chrysalis: With the Elements under my control, I’ll build a new hive of Earth ponies, unicorns, and Pegasi, and I will rule as Queen once again!
Chrysalis is the type of character for whom she seems more likely to be torn up about the fact she’s not ruling as Queen, rather than specifically who or what she rules over.

@Kleinpferd (Lecy98)
There are traces of her sadistic nature in the show, especially in the alternate reality where she won. She does display a definite joy at getting to fight Zecora. I’m not saying she’s entirely irredeemable, since she also clearly misses her Hive, and goes crazy without any-pony to talk to, the the point that she talks to a stick that tried to kill her. But I do think it should be remembered that she is a predator, and tends to have a predatory mindset when it comes to ponies. Reforming her would involve trying to move her past this mindset, which would be a difficult prospect.

I do remember this shit.
And judging by the fact, how IDW comics are mostly not held as canon, and sometimes even being refuted by the following episodes of FiM, let’s just hope that this scene isn’t canon as well. Otherwise this would make Queen Chrysalis an irredeemable monster, toppling Lord Tirek and Opaline from the upper steps of this unholy staircase of wickedness.
I do remember, how Andy Price (the man who was doing these IDW comics) stated that Queen Chrysalis is not a villain, but a complete monster. Well, she is a disgusting monster in IDW comics, but it’s because YOU, Andy Price, portrayed her in such a way. I fail to remember ANY canon scene from FiM in which Chrysalis would be such a nefarious creature as in the IDW comics. So let’s hope that this shit isn’t canon, and Queen Chrysalis isn’t a hopeless irredeemable scum, waiting to be put on the death row.
