I think the bigger concern is that people need to stop putting apples in fruit salad. It’s gross. Apples are pretty delicate and neutral tasting, so if you put them in fruit salad they just end up losing all of their flavor to the OTHER juices they’re swimming in.
 
Also their texture is pretty add odds with anything else in the fruit salad thanks to the skin.
 
Grapes have a similar effect.
 
Go with fruits that have a similar texture, won’t roll off your goddamn plate, and have balanced enough flavors that they will still taste distinct without overpowering the other fruits.

i used to put fries in my mashed potatoes at a local buffet.  
in fact i’ll still do it  
still it’s kinda odd to have an ingredient on the side of a dish that has that ingredient  
it’s be like having a taco and a mound of ground beef you have no intention of adding to the taco
