They’ve got the same eye color. Not exactly the same tones, but come on: Yellow skin, blue hair/mane, light blue eyes…..
 
Think about it: No other Stallion in Equestria have the same colors. I think they changed the tones to make it more appealing. So at least he’s a character that is completely based on Comet.

People don’t hate him because he’s a love interest. They hate him because he comes out of nowhere and is seems important. Same reason almost everyone hated Shining before the finale.
