Let’s also not forget that G5 unicorns are generally very superstitious, which just adds to the question of how and why the unicorns changed so much from what we saw in G4.

My theory is that they used to be so dependent on magic to do just about everything that once they suddenly lost it, they became desperate enough for answers that it became easy for them to believe just about anything.

That could definitely explain how both the Earth Ponies and Pegasi were living a more advanced lifestyle compared to the unicorns. I mean, sure, the Earth Ponies were considerably less advanced than the Pegasi, but they still lived in a well built down with a streetcar line with a certain level of technological innovation designed to safeguard the town. The unicorns didn’t have any of that. Also, fact that both the Earth ponies and Pegasi seemed to be most wary of the unicorn race seems to support this theory of the unicorns fighting over the remnants of Canterlot and, having failed due to their inexperience at non-magical attacks and defences, escaped into the forest.

My theory is that, due to magic getting weaker, they were unable to defend themselves effectively, and lost a war against earth ponies and/or pegasi, which forced them to leave Canterlot.

Still makes me wonder how they could have gone from that to living a secluded, low-tech lifestyle in a forest, though.

This comment actually makes me curious about one thing: in G4 there were quite a few snobbish unicorns, with Spoiled Rich being a good example of this. I wonder how the unicorns went from living the high life in Equestria’s equivalent of Beverly Hills to living in squalor deep in a forest.

By this logic, we can also refer to the ‘All unicorns are snobs,’ of the pre-Unification era.
