Age magic that went wrong affects Apple family age.
Not to mention the fact that Granny Smith looked considerably younger in the during the former and was clearly starting to age during the latter flashback.
Granny smith said that AppleJack tried catching the great seedling when she was Apple bloom’s age but applejack’s said she was even a littler than the cmc when she got her cutie mark.
But like I said before if this is a continuity error it’s not on the writer’s part

Is it? People have complained when Applebloom or the parents weren’t in flashbacks. Now we have a better timeline context. And their presence makes perfect sense given that Applejack was younger than Applebloom when she got her cutiemark therefore the age difference between the two isn’t as great as fans made it out to be. And the parents couldn’t have passed on in the recent past or Applebloom wouldn’t be this old.

After 9 years of enjoying the show the more headaches Season 9 gives fans and the angrier they get it just makes it all the more fun for me.
Because while everybody is fuming trying to make things make sense I’ll just sit back looking fondly at the last 9 years.
Equestria Girls was a direct response to other high school girl shows at the time, such as Monster High. Hasbro wanted to compete with their toys. It was never a decision based on fans.

Most likely the weird inconsistencies are just oversights. I doubt either way the writers intended her to be an adopted child or anything like the conspiracy theorists say, the writers probably just forgot about her age and these other details and how future revelations of their family dynamics would affect that. So the complicated explanations like this probably are digging deeper than really necessary for minor plot holes.
Obviously though like I said, the designs of the parents make perfect sense for Apple Bloom existing and I think that was very clearly intentional. We’ve seen canon parents to different ponies and sometimes they actually look wildly different, with different designs and different color schemes from what the kids actually have. The fact that their dad here has both a similar hair style and the same color scheme as Apple Bloom is very clearly sending a message about her origin and why she looks different from the other apple horses.

Ponyville has a one-room school. Back in the day, 100 years ago and on back, most schools were like this. You had 1st or 2nd graders sitting next to 10th and 11th graders about, or even older. In fact, this stringent thing of having students interact only with kids within 1 year of their age in grades is an extremely new and modernized idea.
And we know the current CMC are pretty much preteens if not young teens by now, but they’re hardly noticeably different from young kids. [Forever Filly] (That’s going to be due to the animation) so your 5-year-old pony is going to have a similar body structure to a pony 13-years-old or so, maybe even 14 or 15.
Obviously Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoon, and company don’t have an age gap too far off from Apple Bloom, but its entirely reasonable to have Apple Bloom (and maybe the other CMCs) be as much as 1.5 or 2 years older.
This would a reasonable point in which, despite Apple Bloom’s age, she doesn’t have her cutie mark when Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon get theirs, ant it feels like Apple Bloom is waiting an eternity for hers to come.

I did not even for a moment think “Oh the apple parents are dead by this point then” when they weren’t in that episode, I actually assumed, from the lack of apple bloom, that they were away travelling or on holiday or something.
And also, again from the lack of apple bloom, that they were likely in the process of making apple bloom at that point lol

Or maybe the writers didn’t think the fans would care this much about random bits of minor time continuity.
That theory certainly gained some credence with the Where The Apple Lies flashback. I’m still taking the flashback in Going To Seed with a grain of salt. If Apple Bloom was born before AJ got her cutie mark and before Granny Smith aged, and if Diamond Tiara was not even born yet by the events of Where The Apple Lies, Apple Bloom should be a fully grown adult now. The only thing I can think of to justify this is simply that Granny Smith doesn’t remember it correctly. The only other plausible explanation is that baby Apple Bloom was a time traveler!
