For those that have not read FoE
Twilight was attempting to make a potion that can just create alicorns to fight the war against the zebras. During testing, the lab was hit almost directly by a balefire bomb. The catwalk Trixie was standing on broke away and Trixie fell into the cat of Alicorn potion. Twilight got locked in the observation room, and could hear something occuring in the testing chamber. The potion had transformed Trixie and she hard started dragging ponies into the vat with her. Finally she pried open the observation room door and dragged twilight in. She then formed the magical Alicorn hivemind known as “The Goddess”. Dipping unicorns into the vat, turning them into Alicorns in her hivemind.

oh yeah….this is when she realized her “war winning magic strategy” was getting too powerful and it eventually consumed herand that’s where alicorns came from
