because of recent uncoverings from the recent chapter I felt reinvigorated to post this old drawing. i made it months ago(December) and I was trying out a shading style; i didn’t like the execution (I still don’t like it now) so I never posted it. I’ll probably redraw this with the canon in mind.
My old theory:
Opaline was the middle sibling of Celestia and Luna. She was a pony no one in their alicorn society cared about. It was only her sisters who ever paid any attention to her.
In this alicorn society; there’s many different types of alicorns. And while Opaline was just a simple fire alicorn her sisters were Celestial alicorns, a type of alicorn that’s worshiped and brought up to be leaders.
Opaline; jealous of her sisters seeked power and limelight; which inadvertently causes the demise of their alicorn society.

The only thing that I got right is the fact there’s a alicorn society and that Opaline is super duper old. I actually like the childhood rivalry angle much more then my sister theory!
I really like how the G5 writers seem to be taking inspiration from the Journal of the Two Sisters and expanding on it. Alicorns were always a a confusing mess with lore that’s contradicted and retconned in various peices of g4 media so seeing g5 give explanations that ties into Opaline’s backstory is a warm welcome for me.

Corollary: In this fandom (in any fandom, really) it’s normal for people to complain when there’s no good reason to, as well.
I could totally see that, that Opaline was jealous of the attention bestowed upon Celestia and Luna, when she was basically ignored, and that ended up seriously warping her mind, into hatred towards her (past) self, hatred of Misty because of what she reminds Opaline of, and hatred of the Alicorn princess sisters for the fillyhood rivalry that may have been partially or totally imagined by Opaline.

In my opinion, it is completely the opposite. No one paid attention to her and she was alone. It can be said that Misty is an example of Opaline’s childhood
It never explicitly state she was a unicorn.
I’m just saying it’s okay to have your own opinion of the lore.
If you like G5 good for you, but it’s normal for people to complain if there’s a good reason to.

It’s alicorn Twilight reveal all over again. Relax, the pain will cease. I for one welcome our new lore.
I understand your frustration … it seems that by now the original lore and the characters no longer matter to anyone especially the writers of the series. I also don’t like that they keep ruining everything unnecessarily, but now the damage is done. At this point it’s up to us fans to consider what is canon or not. I personally liked things as they were established in G4, so I guess I’ll consider all these contradictions created by G5 as non-canon or alternate universe like they should be.

Here’s why having Opaline connected to them is a problem.
Luna would never be mean to Opaline because she knows how it feels to be in someone’s shadow.
The reason why Luna becomes Nightmare Moon is because the ponies didn’t appreciate her and her night.
It was better to leave Celestia and Luna alone because it was enough to read The Journal of the Two Sisters to know that they came from a realm habited by other alicorns..
The fact that they and Opaline knew each other only create more confusion.
In fact, it seems that they have simply recycled a part of the story that they had in mind for the 2017 movie.
Opaline and Luna seem to both have abandonment issues that ended up turning them evil at one point, Luna wasn’t exactly peaceful as Nightmare Moon either
