Maybe she just took an indirect approach before…
Maybe she was there for when Luna became Nightmare Moon, pouring poison into her ear in the hopes that her against Celestia so they would destroy each other.
Opaline might have also done other things to try and destroy Equestria, including unsealing King Sombra, freeing Tirek from Tartarus, and maybe even giving Chrysalis the idea to attack Equestria twice.
And when all of these plans failed, Opaline probably had no choice but to attack directly.

This backstory explains a lot, actually. Why Celestia and Luna sought out powerful crystals. Why Celestia and Luna built their original castle on top of the Tree of Harmony. Why Celestia was so pressed for Twilight to make friends, gain power, and lead Equestria. They knew Opaline was still a threat.

When I saw Opaline in this flashback, I had the same reaction as Celestia and Luna.
They’re looking at her like “Why are you here? You shouldn’t be here.”
This is another G4 connection gone wrong.
