Several reasons, mostly related to the fact that the original design wasn't really finished, and also needed to have some overdesign corrected so it would be better to draw and animate as a playable character. He actually looks marketly different now from what was a whole lot of old, somewhat same-y concept art of Reine NPCs. He needed the glow up and it rules.
They even re-did his winter sprite buddy, who frankly looks like a joke in the original concept art, lol. Now he's a proper gigachad viking sprite.
