I mean judging from what I’ve been told, it doesn’t seem like their worries were completely unfounded, if Hasbro did plan on season 3 being the final season and hadn’t announced that they renewed it for a season 4 yet.

I was there for the Equestria Girls controversy, but more like after the official announcement, where bronies just complained about the designs. I, a pre-teen girl at the time, was the odd one out in liking them–

I know I’m just adding my two cents to an old conversation, but I remember the Twicorn drama. I didn’t like it at the time and thought it would be a temporary thing. It didn’t help that it was a shortened season and maybe it would have been handled better if season 3 was a full season. I remember people crying that it was the end of the fandom and the show.

It really didn’t help things when the Equestria Girls concept art was leaked. Some people thinking it was a movie or maybe a show that would replace FiM with season 3 being the final season. Of course, that didn’t happen, but it was what was theorized at the time.

Why does she have Raspberry highlights instead of Green? I mean she looks good here but why the change? It wasn’t necessary. Unless this relates to the show and Pipp dyes her hair to give her a new look

A lot of people who came in from Season 4 onward look back at this with the assumption that of course the show was going to get big and go for nine seasons because that’s what eventually happened, but at the time S3 was being produced the matter was very much in doubt, because that was while S2 was still in its second half airing on The Hub and Hasbro was just starting to come around to realizing it had a breakaway hit with Friendship Is Magic. A new contract meant literally everything had to be renegotiated, with a lot of the actors and artists and writers already having made other professional commitments because they gotta eat, and it was complicated by the fact that as a hit show they were in a position to ask for more money to return. It was a strenuous time for fans, which severely added to The Twilicorn Drama being so furious and bitter, and there wasn’t a lot the show’s creators could do about that since they needed to come up with an ending that could either be the end of the series or a jumping-off point for new seasons; they did the best they could with it, and while they surely would have played it differently if they’d known at the time they’d eventually get 222 episodes, in retrospect I think they did a pretty good job with the constraints they had to work with.

This was what I heard, actually, that Twilight was made an alicorn in Season 3 since the FiM crew thought Season 3 was gonna be their last. I didn’t know all the details though, so I refrained from commenting that in case I was wrong 😅

No, it wasn’t To Sell Toys, and this has been a settled issue for many years now; basically the entire editorial/writing team working on Season 3 has said that they only made her a princess in the Season Finale because they didn’t know while they were producing S3 whether or not that would be the Series Finale, and they wanted to make a finale that could stand for the entire series if the show didn’t get renewed. The original contract was for 65 episodes, just like almost every animated series the check-writers thought had marketing potential back before streaming was a thing, and Hasbro was only just starting to realize that it had captured lightning in a bottle with MLP G4 at the time so there was no guarantee whatsoever that S4 was going to happen.

Faust Herself’s original plan for the series– which later Producers like Wall, Cody, et al. carried forward– was to have Twilight take over for Celestia and Luna in the final season, whenever that was, although Faust didn’t envision her getting alicornified; they made her an Alicorn princess at the end of S3 so that they could imply she would be taking over if the show didn’t get renewed, but adjust the storylines to make her a non-ruling princess like Cadance if it did get renewed.

IMO, Twilight should’ve ascended around Season 5, maybe even making it a mid-season thing rather than a finale to let viewers adjust quickly rather than letting people sit agitated for months.

Then we should’ve had a Season 6, and mayyybe a half-length Season 7, and that should’ve been the end.

People lost their brains over Alicorn Twilight, but it was mostly over the concept itself, combined with the real possibility that Season 3 would be the last one; it was obvious from the post-credits scene in the first episode of S3 where the season was going to end up.
